Hyde Jekyll, Me (Complete)

So I guess we’re back to calling it Hyde, Jekyll, Me? Maybe I’ll just call it Two Binnies Walk Into a Bar.Production is underway for SBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama known for some time as Jekyll and Me, the romantic comedy about a hero with a split personality and the woman who finds herself in an unusual love triangle with both of them. Hyun Bin (Secret Garden) and Han Ji-min (Rooftop Prince) are reuniting after co-starring in King’s Wrath (Fatal Encounter) earlier this year, and joined the rest of the cast for the drama’s inaugural script read.

The project is another webtoon adaptation (what drama isn’t these days) of a series called Dr. Jekyll Is Mr. Hyde, a romantic comedy about a man whose two personalities are opposite extremes — one is the nicest man in the world, while the other is the worst. I guess as long as he’s not a killer, it’s not so bad? I’m disturbed at myself for thinking there’s an upside in this situation, but they’re not exactly giving me a lot of upsides to work with here.

He’s a quirky chaebol shut-in who never leaves his home, which happens to be an amusement park. Han Ji-min plays the leader of a circus troupe at that amusement park that the hero wants to get rid of, and she fights to keep their act alive. Sung Joon (Discovery of Romance) plays a gentle hypnotherapist, and I find it really amusing that given the setup, he could just as easily be the hero’s therapist or the heroine’s circus troupe member. Maybe he’ll be both.

Han Sang-jin (Birth of a Beauty) will be yet another rival for Hyun Bin, and Lee Deok-hwa (Hotel King),Lee Seung-joon (Misaeng), and Lee Won-geun (Secret Door) costar. Directing is PD Jo Young-kwang of 49 Days and writing is Kim Ji-woon of Alice in Cheongdam-dong. It certainly has a great cast to boast of; let’s just hope the story manages the juggling act in a way that doesn’t make me hate one of the Hyun Bins.

Hyde, Jekyll, Me follows Pinocchio on Wednesdays and Thursdays in January. Ready or not, the year of the split personalities is headed our way…

I love the bright colors in this new poster for SBS’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama Hyde, Jekyll, Me— I have no idea what a comic book style has anything to do with the premise whatsoever, but I guess we’re in for a whimsical romance of sorts, the way the drama is setting up the main loveline between the two Hyun Bins and Han Ji-min. She’ll be at odds with the gruff hero who’s nothing but mean to her, but then she’ll meet his split-personality Robin, who sweeps her off her feet and makes every parting bittersweet, because he never knows when he’ll resurface.

Hyun Bin stars as an acerbic chaebol shut-in who lives and works at a theme park called Wonderland. He never leaves, never dates, never does anything fun. It’s not because he loves his work either — his character description says he lives life like a monk or a zombie, in that every day is the same as the last. But his split-personality Robin is a sweet romantic, and when Han Ji-min falls for him, she finds herself in a bizarre love triangle with Robin and the assy hero with the same face.

In the new teaser, Han Ji-min introduces Hyun Bin as a cold emotionless sociopath with zero manners. Cue montage of rants: “Get out. Get out. Crazy… Damned… I. Am. So-rry. There, that good enough?” But then nice guy Robin emerges, and they have all these cute late-night dates in the theme park (looking adorable together). Panicked, Hyun Bin asks her about this other guy: “Does he look like me?” She spits back: “He’s nothing like you, the person I remember.” The copy reads: “Alike but different… a love triangle with one man.”

At least when you have a two-person love triangle, there’s no sad second lead who deserves the girl but ends up alone? I don’t know, I’m still working out the mental gymnastics to figure out how this goes. Though that also makes me sadder that Sung Joon gets third billing. But whatchoo gonna do, compete with two Hyun Bins? Is it too much to hope that two of him means double the romance in this drama? As long as it doesn’t work out to double the angst, I think I’m good to go. Glasses Binnie vs. Dimples Binnie. I see no losing side here.

Hyde, Jekyll, Me premieres next Wednesday, January 21.

Happy new year! It’s a brand new year with a whole new crop of dramas ahead and no time to waste. Here’s our first peek at SBS’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama Hyde, Jekyll, Me, starring Hyun Bin in his long-awaited drama comeback as a man with a split personality, and Han Ji-min as the woman who’s stuck in the unfortunate love triangle with both of them. Of course the two personalities happen to be the nicest man in the world and the rudest man in the world. Gee, guess which guy we’re rooting for.

Hyun Bin plays the prickly chaebol CEO of an amusement park, and we watch as he steals a balloon from a little girl, declares that balloons will be forbidden for the day, and then points to the dancing balloon clown to add, “No dancing either!” Ha. What’s a killjoy doing running an amusement park, anyway?

Han Ji-min plays the leader of a circus troupe who’s struggling not to get her act cut from the park’s roster, and she fights with Hyun Bin to be given a chance to stay. He kicks her to the curb without so much as a second glance, so then she sets out to make him change his mind, eventually leading to hijinks and love. For now he seems impervious to her charms, but the preview only hints at the nice personality, which hasn’t come into play yet.

The teaser introduces the two Hyun Bins and asks, “Can’t they both be mine?” LOL. Hey, I was thinkin’ it. Han Ji-min shakes the crazy thought out of her head and tells herself: “Get it together!” Lucky for you this is dramaland, and you get to have your cake and eat it too. Nom nom nom.

Hyde, Jekyll, Me follows Pinocchio in mid-January.
